Pre-purchase survey days

Image
Pre-purchase surveys were carried out in early November 2021, fortunately on days with good weather. Day one was a full engine survey by a Finning Cat engineer with a lot of marine engine experience (thanks Steve). We have a short video taken from Lazaway during the sea trial. The end result of the engine survey was very positive with both engines in excellent condition, and with only a comprehensive service and very minor work required.  Interestingly one of the first things the engineer discovered is that one of the engines had been replaced very early in the life of the boat - probably after just 6 engine hours. The serial number on the port engine was not the one recorded in the original boat manifest and was not close to the serial number of the starboard engine (which is record in the original manifest). The second pre-purchase survey day involved a comprehensive examination of the boat by Oli of Optimum Marine Surveys. He did a fantastic job and engaged with us throughout. Altho

Engines and performance

Lazaway is powered by twin Caterpillar 3116 350HP engines on shaft drives. At the time of us buying the boat the engine hours were just under 1360 - so actually very modest usage over the life of the boat (an average of 61 hours per annum).  Low usage is not always a good thing, and so we had the engines thoroughly surveyed by a Finning Cat marine engineer prior to purchase, included a sea trial.  They passed this survey with very few issues, indeed the engineer was extremely positive (with the normal 'given the age of the engines' provisos!).  Everyone we have spoken to who knows Cats says that they like to be used and so we hope to be able to add a few more hours in the coming years.   Lazaway has two fuel tanks that hold a total of 2,270 ltrs.  At this stage our understanding of fuel consumption (of the two engines combined) and range (based upon a 20% reserve) is illustrated in the following chart: As you can see fuel consumption at higher revs is really quite frightening,

She's not new

Lazaway was built in 1998 and so at the time of us buying her she was more than 22 years old.  Fortunately she has been owned for nearly all her life by a single family (from whom we bought the boat) who looked after her extremely well - the hull looks immaculate, the interior is remarkably clean, and her electronic navigation gear has been recently upgraded and is state of the art. Lazaway is such a beautifully put together boat and is in a condition that has made it easy for us to visualise how we might use and enjoy her.  Our thanks go to her past guardians. Having said all that, she is 22 years old, so needs some attention and updating.  Over the 2021/22 winter we plan to undertake some renovation works at Plymouth Yacht Haven, and will show the before and after pictures of what we do.

Introducing Lazaway

Lazaway lying at Plymouth Yacht Haven during pre-purchase surveys Nov 2021 Lazaway is a Grand Banks 42 Motor Yacht built in 1998. According to Ian Macrae of Yacht and Boat: The Grand Banks 42 Motoryacht is a boat designed for people who wish to enjoy cruising. The semi-displacement hull of every Grand Banks offers the best of both worlds, economical and comfortable cruising around 9 knots, with the ability to achieve planing speed with bigger motors fitted. According to the brochure the demands of many different cruising experiences as well as the wide experiences of so many owners has enabled Grand Banks to earn a reputation for being the choice of those who truly understand what it takes to go cruising. It’s all about economy, comfort and cruising in style. And that is an understatement when people start talking about the Grand Banks 42 Motoryacht.  It is the idea of being able to cruise in comfort at a slow but steady speed, in a boat that has been beautifully buil
