Annual lift out 28 April - 9 May 2023
On the afternoon of Friday 28 April we took Lazaway from its berth to the BJ Marine hoist in Bangor - this is a smaller setup than had been used in Plymouth. The hoist itself can lift 50 tonnes (so plenty of spare capacity there), but the width of the hoist berth is only just bigger than Lazaway so a very tight squeeze to get in. With Johnny’s reassuring guidance all went well.
The work we wanted to get done, and did get done, was:
Clean everything below the waterline
Anti foul the hull (two coats)
Change anodes (stern, shafts, bow thruster, stern thruster, trim tabs)
Clean propellers and shafts
Polish the above waterline hull
Paint the boot line stripe
To illustrate what we did here are a few before and afters (you can work out which is which!)
Polishing the hull was a four stage process:
1 Apply Y10 gel to remove yellow staining (over a large part of the hull but not all of it) and then was this off.
2 Using an electric polishing pad clean and shine the fibreglass using Farecla G3 compound. This is the longest process requiring all the grooves the the fibreglass to be done, the removal of the compound using first a wet cloth and the a remaining residue using a dry cloth.
3 Application of a wax polish - we have used Auto Glym super resin polish - applied and then polished off.
4 Finally, the application of a ceramic coating - we have used Gtechniq Marine ceramic fast coat - this is wiped on with one cloth and off with another. This coating is meant to keep the fibreglass shine for longer than without it - we’re not certain whether it will really make a difference, but we’ve given it a go. We shall see.
As we put the boat back in the water the hull above and below the waterline looked fantastic.
On Tuesday 9th May we relaunched and went for a short sea trial - we reckon that the clean bottom is giving an extra knot of speed. Sea trial route:
Now that Lazaway is back at her berth the superstructure fibreglass is getting the cleaning and polishing treatment - we’ll soon be ready for our season’s adventures. Happy days
