Kilmore Quay to Kinsale 22 May 2023

Kilmore Quay harbour decor at night

The harbour as we left at 05.00 this morning.  Despite the early hour
and lingering darkness it was quite busy with several boats
heading out before and after us.

We made the early start in order to get as much benefit from the tide as possible on the long run to Kinsale.  The first couple of hours were dead calm, enabling us to see grey seal, harbour porpoise and bottle-nosed dolphin - these are the first bottle-nosed we’ve seen from Lazaway (a tick!).

This calm was then followed by three hours of rockin-an-rollin in a stiff cold broadside from the north. Plates, cups, kettle, everything had to be stowed away - what wasn’t stowed (binoculars, notebooks, us!) skidded from side to side for the duration.  The following videos really do not give a proper representation of the boats wave-top dance, but they are included anyway.

The final 4 hours were relatively calm, and became quite warm and pleasant, arriving at Kinsale at 14.00, with wind picking up and becoming quite brisk. Unfortunately the yacht club marina right in Kinsale is full and can’t take us, so we have found a spot (on the fuel berth) at the Castle Park Marina.  This is on the other side of the river, and will involve a 1.5 mile (or a bit more) walk into town. The exercise will do us good.

We’ve arrived!
