Oban to Linnhe Marina a gentle day 11 August 2023

Lazaway at its berth in Oban yesterday evening

This morning’s activities were multifarious.  Top of the list was watching the activity in the harbour.  In particular the changeover of guests on the small Inner Hebridean fleet of cruise ships - Friday is the day. Four of the Majestic Line boats were in harbour (they are based out of Oban) and all busy saying goodbye to one lot of guests, then getting rid of all the empty bottles and dirty laundry, then restocking food, drink and fuel.  The chef on the one beside us, the Glen Etive, was very engaging, and tortured us with the smell of bacon butties this morning.

Next on the list of activities was a trek to the top of Pulpit Hill with its superb views over Oban and the seas beyond Kerrera and out to Mull.  These are shown in this blog on 12 July 2022.

Last, but not least, was a trip to Tesco’s - more supplies needed.

Into Tesco’s from the beyond.
You’d think we were going to have a party!

This is a retail establishment we didn’t visit!

At lunchtime we departed for the short trip northwards to Linnhe Marina.  Very quiet, with lots of residents’ boats and very few visitors.  We got a berth on the hammerhead making everything very easy.

Our berth at Linnhe Marina.
The EU money tree that pays for all the new marinas in Ireland
obviously doesn’t operate here.
The cleats are weirdest ever.

Susie and Gordon have gone for a cycle.
Good to know someone is getting some exercise

Wonderful view of Castle Stalker with the hills of Morvern in the background

Stalker Castle, the Castle of the Falconer, dates from 1450.  James IV (1473 - 1513) frequently stayed when on hunting trips. Stewart of Appin, a brown noser, was appointed keeper of the castle.  In 1645 Mac Ian Stewart, in a moment of drunken folly, gave it to Donald Campbell of the Airds, receiving in return a Birlinn (a small sailing vessel).
This evening the current owners were having a get together in the castle with their two dogs.

We watched them from the comfort of The Old Inn.
Happy days.

The boat bird list has 14 species.
