Early morning at our mooring in Canna bay. |
Looking north at the east end of Canna as we leave the harbour bay. |
We had a leisurely departure from Canna at 10.00 (dodging the incoming Cal-Mac ferry), the timing designed to get us to the top end of the Sound of Mull just as the tide turns to take us south. The weather has been fabulous - a little bit of a NW breeze, but because we are running with it, it feels like there is no wind at all. And it’s very warm and sunny.
We’ve done quite a bit of motoring today so our highlights have been the fabulous views of the islands and headlands as we pass them. It has been one long orgaziama!
The light at the SE tip of Canna with the island of Rum (or Rhum) behind. |
The mountains at the south end of Rum. |
The island of Muck nearest, and Eigg in the distance. |
The Ardnamurchan Peninsula as we approach |
Ardnamurchan Lighthouse looking splendid in the sun |
Rubha nan Gall lighthouse on the north side of Tobermory as we enter the north end of the Sound of Mull, and picking up a bit of southerly tide. Happy days. |
And we haven’t been devoid of wildlife - Harbour Seals, Harbour Porpoises, Rabbits (on Canna), and
a bumblebee - enjoying a rest on its trip down the Sound of Mull. I wonder where it is going.
As we left the south end of the Sound of Mull and crossed over towards Oban and Kerrera we passed Lismore Lighthouse with Lismore Island behind, and the Grampians behind that. Ben Nevis is up there somewhere. |
And according to my mountain naming app we should have been able to see Ben Nevis - on the very left above. In truth it was a bit misty and far away. Maybe we saw it, maybe we didn’t. |
16.30 we arrived at Kerrera (having dodged a Cal-Mac on the way in) in glorious sunshine. We’re on an easy to park hammerhead in a lovely location.
We’re booked in the Waypoint Restaurant at Kerrera (the wooden shed) - it has a good reputation, so fingers crossed. Showers first, and then a Prosecco on board, then the Waypoint. Life’s a b_ _ _ _! |
The boat bird list is a very respectable 36 species, helped by getting 20 before breakfast at Canna. The list includes Cuckoo and Bonxie at Canna, two Storm Petrels before we entered the Sound of Mull, and Common Scoter not long before entering Kerrera. A pretty good day.
