Oban Excitement 29 May 2025

A Barrel Jellyfish Rhizostoma pulmonary in Oban harbour. We’ve seen quite a
few of them as we have motored about in the past two weeks.
This one was about 0.5m across. They are harmless to humans.

Last night and all this morning has been dominated by really quite strong winds and lashing rain.  We have been bouncing about quite a lot at our berth - with a lot of rope creaking.  Consequently we are not going anywhere today.  However, there have been no end of things to entertain us.

First of all one of our freshwater tanks ran dry, and as a result we got an airlock in the freshwater system.  Very easy to resolve you would think.  But not at all. It was only once we got to plan D did we finally get it sorted - keeping us occupied for about 1.5 hours.

John and Jacquie took their boat over early this morning to Kerrera to leave it for a couple of weeks.  They then got the wee ferry back to Oban through the wild weather and came for shelter to us. Coffee and a light lunch, before they left for an early afternoon train.

Next, Gordon got on his white horse and came to the rescue of a meerkat.  It all happens in Oban!

He spotted an appeal on the Sailing West of Scotland Facebook page looking for help to reunite a meerkat soft toy with its owners on a boat called Capella - in Oban marina.  He went spoke to the Capella folk, who then got in touch with the Facebook poster, and apparently the meerkat is now on its way back to its legal guardians.

The Facebook page which tells the story, including thanks to Gordon.
What a hero!

This afternoon, with the weather greatly improved, a visit to the chocolate shop was called for - Susie was wilting from lack of a shot of good drinking chocolate.  So in we went.  Once that crisis was resolved, we then had a visit to Tesco for a drinks top-up.

Tesco drinks top-up!

This evening we are debating how to get home, taking account of the forecast for the next week.  It’s not good - the winds forecast at Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre is not good.

Watch this space.
