Gobbins Group Gathering 09 July 2025s

What a lovely bunch!

With a very calm evening forecast and the start of a heatwave, we thought a trip to the Gobbins was in order.  Off we set at 18.00 into a chilly wind - the sea was calm, but the temperature was far from heatwave.  The seabird colony at the Gobbins and some cetacean spotting were our aims.

The seabirds at the Gobbins were spot-on. Guillemots, Razorbills, Fulmars, Kittiwakes and Shags all in residence. Plus an excellent showing of Puffins - 47 were counted.  

Then it was time for tea and rolls, and choccie bickies that had spent some time rolling around the deck. All the tastier for it!

Then we headed towards the Copelands in the hope of spotting a porpoise, dolphin or whale. Despite diligent watching and excellent supervision by Michael, it was all to no avail. No cetaceans were seen. 

The Belfast Hill as the evening wore on. 

Back into Bangor by 21.00. What a lovely wee cruise. Happy days.

The Ailsa Run - Troon to Bangor 15 June 2024

  Ailsa Craig has been our constant companion for this whole trip.  A destination to start with, and then a receding landmark as we neared Bangor. It is also known as Paddy’s Milestone because it is about half way between Glasgow and Belfast, and was a haven for Catholics during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century.  It is, of course, also famously known as the source of the granite used for making curling stones. We left Troon just before 09.00 in calm but showery weather.  No sooner had we left but the town was engulfed in a dark shower, but we missed it. Arran Island was under and swimming in its own weather system. As we motored south nearing Ailsa Craig the weather improved - it was actually warm and sunny, as well as calm.  Just what we ordered! Hebridean Adventure 2025 15 May 2025

  Our anchorage among the Ardmore Islands on the SE corner of the Island of Islay Come with us on holiday amongst the Inner and Outer Hebrides on the west coast of Scotland.  Three weeks (ish) of pockling about, guided by the weather, tides and our whims.  What could be better?!  And if day one is anything to go by, it’s going to be a belter?! After 3 or 4 weeks of brilliant weather we can’t really believe that it’s still fabulous, and that it’s forecast to last for another week.  We left Bangor at 12.00 midday, and headed north.  A little bit breezy for the first couple of hours, but then it became calmer and calmer, until it was glassy calm at 18.00 as we arrived at the south corner of Islay. Killybegs on a Bank Holiday weekend 03 June 2023

  Killybegs harbour with the nicest boat in the marina near far right  Another stunning day, hot and sunny and calm.  However an hour to the west just beyond the headland there is stiff enough northerly breeze blowing. We decided to do a couple more jobs on the boat and take it easy today.  We also organised a fuel tanker to come onto the Town Pier to give us a top up - we took 781ltrs of diesel and so will start tomorrow with full tanks. Donegal Oil man providing us with very long hose and dose of diesel  We have had to give up on one of our jobs - the hand operated bilge pump stopped working during our rough crossing and it won’t be persuaded to come back to life.  We’ll have to sort out a more robust one when we get home - and can survive perfectly well in the meantime. We’re still walking around Killybegs amazed at the amount of money that has been invested here in the relatively recent past.  We keep thinking of the man in Kinsale (or was it Dingl...
